Two years later, in 1981, some specimens were also spotted in Denmark and the Netherlands and, later on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Sweden in 1982;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Belgium in 1985;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Norway in 1989;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">France in 1991.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Subsequently, the species spread to the United Kingdom and Norway<\/b>, thanks to the speed at which new areas were colonized, becoming the dominant species in the local ecosystem in some of these regions.<\/p>\n<p><b>As for the classification of this species, some taxonomic issues have been identified<\/b>. <b>The first name<\/b> under which it was introduced in Europe <b>was Ensis directus, later studies pointed out that this name actually referred to an extinct fossil species<\/b>, <b>which led to the proposal of the name Ensis Americanus instead<\/b>. Nonetheless, both names are currently in use. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Morphological characteristics of Ensis Directus<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The shell of Ensis Directus is equivalve, inequilateral<\/b>, long and slender. <b>In proportion it\u2019s roughly six times longer than it is wide<\/b>. <b>Its maximum dimension is 25 cm in length<\/b>. <b><br \/><\/b><br \/>The valves are slightly curved and open at both ends, with sharp edges. Unlike other species, it lacks transverse grooves on the anterior edge.  <b>Each valve is equipped with a hinge and a small lateral tooth.<\/b> The left valve also features two small, vertical cardinal teeth.<\/p>\n<p><b>A notable characteristic of this species is its protective outer layer, which shields it from erosion caused by mud and sand. <\/b>Compared to other razor clams in northern waters, Ensis Directus stands out for:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Dimensions<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Shape<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Various scars and unique internal markings on the shell.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The external coloring is whitish with a glossy greenish-brown periostracum, while it\u2019s pale white on the inside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Distribution and reproduction of Ensis Directus<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1741 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itticabuonocore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ensis-directus-colorazione.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.itticabuonocore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ensis-directus-colorazione.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/www.itticabuonocore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ensis-directus-colorazione-480x360.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 500px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As the name suggests, <b>Ensis Directus, also known as the Atlantic razor clam, is native to the eastern Atlantic coast of North America<\/b>, ranging from Labrador to South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><b>It prefers to hide in sandy and muddy seabeds and moves only short distances.<\/b> During its pelagic life stage, the larvae are carried by tidal currents, which contributes to their dispersion and subsequent colonization.<\/p>\n<p><b>As for the reproduction of this species, the steps are as follows: <\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">males release their sperm into the seawater;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">the sperm fertilizes the females through their siphons;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">the eggs are fertilized and the resulting zygotes eventually develop into larvae;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">the larvae are then released into the surrounding water.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At this point, <b>the larvae go through two phases<\/b>: <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>the pelagic stage<\/b>, during which they move freely and easily in the water;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>the adult stage<\/b>, when the larva settles into sand and mud. During these stages, both the body and mantle develop.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Regarding its feeding habits, <b>Ensis Directus is a true filter feeder: water is filtered through the shell, allowing it to obtain the food and nutrients it needs<\/b>. <\/p>\n<p><b>For fishing<\/b>, <b>both manual techniques and hydraulic dredges<\/b> <b>are used<\/b>, just like for Ensis Minor and Solen Marginatus.
