{"id":5436,"date":"2022-10-13T12:33:24","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T10:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itticabuonocore.com\/senza-categoria\/from-water-to-land-the-role-of-gastropods\/"},"modified":"2022-10-13T12:33:24","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T10:33:24","slug":"from-water-to-land-the-role-of-gastropods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itticabuonocore.com\/en\/seafood\/from-water-to-land-the-role-of-gastropods\/","title":{"rendered":"From water to land: the role of gastropods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known for emerging from the sea to conquer dry land, <strong>gastropods <\/strong><\/span><strong>belong to the mollusk family and are characterized by a single spiral-shaped shell and antennae that serve both tactile and visual functions.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The term gastropod means \u201cfeet in the stomach,\u201d referring to these animals\u2019 ability to move by gliding on a \u201cfoot,\u201d<\/strong> which is a muscular extension of their body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Types of gastropods <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having adapted to both land and sea, <strong>gastropods include both marine and terrestrial species and are highly valued in cuisine in both ways.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Among the different types, we have: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Limpet<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>This marine species lives among the rocks<\/strong>, protected by a shield-shaped, non-spiraled shell with a smooth, shiny interior and a rough exterior often encrusted with algae and other sessile organisms. <strong>Thanks to their ability to retain water, limpets can survive for long periods on land surfaces.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>They are much appreciated both as a delicacy and as a bait by fishermen.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Sea snail<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3448 size-full\" title=\"Discover all the features of sea snails!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itticabuonocore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/lumache-di-mare.jpg\" alt=\"Sea snails\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.itticabuonocore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/lumache-di-mare.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.itticabuonocore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/lumache-di-mare-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 500px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several gastropod mollusks are grouped under this common name, but <strong>the most widespread species in marine environments is <\/strong><\/span><strong>Monodonta turbinata<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, easily recognized by its spotted, spiral-shaped shell. <strong>Like limpets, it can survive for extended periods out of water by sealing moisture inside its shell with the operculum.<\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Spiny murex<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>This type of gastropod prefers sandy seabeds<\/strong>. <strong>It preys on other mollusks, crustaceans and worms,<\/strong> and can bore through their calcium-based shells using their abrasive radula combined with special enzymes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that, <strong>especially in ancient times, these mollusks were used to extract royal purple dye<\/strong> (from their glands) <strong>to color the princesses\u2019 veils<\/strong>? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Nudibranchs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>These creatures lack a shell<\/strong> <strong>and <\/strong><strong>are hard to miss thanks to their striking colors<\/strong>. In the culinary world, we\u2019ve come to know them as  <\/strong><\/span><strong>escargot<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the cosmetics industry has highlighted the many skin benefits of <\/span>snail mucin (snail slime), which is <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widely used in skincare products.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Gastropod reproduction <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Gastropods are<\/strong> <\/span><b>hermaphroditic<\/b><strong>, meaning they possess both male and female reproductive organs. <\/strong>Among prosobranchs, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the pallial duct evolved to serve multiple functions, such as: storing sperm, forming the protective egg capsule and secreting both nutrients and mucus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pulmonates<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <strong>are also hermaphroditic, but unlike prosobranchs, they cannot produce sperm and eggs simultaneously<\/strong>. In that case, <strong>the shell appeared to be coiled upon itself, with an overall shape that resembled a wheel.<\/strong>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, though, <strong>that shape took too much space and not much compact.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>To address this issue, evolution led to the development of a conospiral shell<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>, where each new whorl formed next to the previous one.<\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>But this shape had flaws too: it caused an imbalance<\/strong>, as the weight was concentrated on just one side. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>So there was yet another evolution, the one we know today: a modern shell, in which the coiling axis is oblique to the body<\/strong>.
