Atlantic Tehuelche scallop

As the name suggests, this species of scallop is native to the Atlantic Ocean, and is locally abundant on the sandy seabeds off the coasts of Brazil and Argentina (particularly in Espírito Santo and the Golfo Nuevo).

The Atlantic Tehuelche scallop can reach a maximum length of 8 cm and has the following characteristics:

  1. each valve features two auricles, with the right auricle (slightly) smaller than the left. Both have different radial ribs;
  2. the shell is rounded and the valves are unequal in size. Width and length are nearly the same;
  3. compared to other species, this scallop shows 17 primary radial ribs, each composed of 3 secondary ridges. These ribs radiate from the hinge and are rounded in shape. They are narrower than the intercostal spaces and intersect with concentric lamellae;
  4. the external coloration shows shades ranging from white, usually white or red with darker spots;
  5. the interior coloration mirrors that of the exterior.
