EASTERN SCALLOP
This scallop species (Patinopecten yessoensis) is most commonly found in Pacific waters, from China to Japan and from Korea to Russia. It was later introduced for aquaculture purposes in the waters of Morocco, France and western Canada.
It is characterized by a shell with the following features:
- A circular outline;
- Two valves: the left valve is convex, while the right valve is flatter;
- Two auricles (lateral extensions) with 20 radial ribs, more prominent on the right valve;
- A centrally positioned umbo.
The external coloration ranges from red to pink on the left valve, while the right valve is white. The inner surface is also white.
